The Castle of St. George (São Jorge Castle, Castelo de São Jorge) is a historical fortress on a high hill. It is from this castle that the history of the city, archaeological finds of these places indicate that already in the 7th century BC there was a civilization here. St. George's Castle played an important role in the history of Lisbon, fortifications were located here, which were successively occupied by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Moors. Since the 12th century, the castle has served as a royal palace, military barracks, home to the National Archives, and now it is a national monument and museum.
