The Carmo Convent (Convento da Ordem do Carmo) was built in 1389, but did not survive the Lisbon earthquake in 1755. Over the course of a century, attempts were made to restore the monastery, but in the middle of the 19th century it was decided not to continue the reconstruction of the building, leaving the naves of the church open to the sky. The ruins of the Carmo Monastery were turned into an earthquake monument. Since 1864, it has been the Carmo Archeological Museum.
