Mother of Georgia

The monument "Mother of Georgia" (Kartlis Deda) is one of the symbols of Tbilisi, which rises from the top of Sololaki hill. The twenty—meter sculpture symbolizes national culture and character: in the left hand there is a cup of wine as a symbol of hospitality and love, and in the right hand there is a sword that will repel any enemy.

Interesting facts

The author's name of the sculpture is "Capital", but it was not accepted by society, and the locals began to call it "Kartlis Deda" or "Mother Georgia".

The sculpture faces the equestrian statue of King Vakhtang I Gorgasali, the author of which is also Elguja Amashukeli.

The history of the monument

The original sculpture was made in 1958 from wood. It was a temporary monument, but I liked it so much that it was decided to leave it on a permanent basis. In 1963, the sculpture was replaced with an aluminum one, and the author Elguja Amashukeli was awarded the Shota Rustaveli State Prize.

According to legends, before the replacement, the second sculpture was installed nearby, and for some time two "mothers" looked at the city at once.

In 1997, the monument was replaced with a new one. At the same time, the "outfit" has also changed: now the dress has longer sleeves, and instead of a scarf, laurel leaves began to decorate the head.

Observation deck

An observation deck has been built at the foot of the monument, which offers a fantastic panoramic view of the entire city.
