In front of the tower of the Holy Trinity Church in Jelgava there is a monument in memory of the first President of Latvia — Janis Caksta (1859-1927).

The monument was unveiled on November 14, 2003, and its author is the sculptor Arta Dumpe.
During his presidency, Janis Cakste proclaimed 402 laws. Among them is the Law on Education, which obliges the state and local governments to create as many schools for national minorities as necessary.
A square in Liepaja is also named after Chakste.
