The Cathedral of the Immaculate Virgin Mary began to be built during the time of Duke Frederick in 1630-1635. However, the construction was completed much later, under Duke Jacob. From 1672 to 1773, the church belonged to the Jesuits. And from 1783 to 1798, the residence of the Livonian bishop was located in Jelgava.

The modern Cathedral building was built in 1906 on the site of the old church and consecrated in the name of St. George. Later, the name of the church was changed to the "Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary". During the Second World War, the church was seriously damaged, and by 1992 it was completely restored. In 1995, the Diocese of Jelgava was established, after which the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary received the status of a cathedral.
