The Daugavpils Church Hill is a unique place where temples of the main denominations of Latgale are located on a small territory. Temples are not only the spiritual center of the New Building, but also its architectural dominant. This area of the city traces its history back to 1865.
With the increase in the number of residents in the area of the New Building, there was a need for the construction of churches. At the same time, it should be noted that the denominational composition of the inhabitants was diverse. Catholics, Lutherans, Orthodox, and Old Believers lived here.

The Martin Luther Cathedral was the first to be built in 1893, not far from it — the Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Orthodox Dvina garrison Church (later – Boriso-Gleb Cathedral). There is also the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas.

During their construction, a kind of competition of temples in expressiveness and architectural splendor took place involuntarily. The variety of styles of temples, from Baroque and Neo-Gothic to Byzantine style, forms a unique panorama, characteristic only of Daugavpils. During their existence, the temples went through a lot: there was a decline and destruction, but they were always reborn again.
