Today, it is rare to find temples of the XIII century, which have survived to the present day. Kuldiga Lutheran Church of St. Catherine (Kuldīgas Svētās Katrīnas evaņģēliski luteriskā baznīca) is one of them. The wooden church was built in 1252, and in 1665 it was rebuilt from stone.

The church was the court church of Kuldiga (Goldingen), the first capital of the Duchy of Courland. Duke Jacob himself was baptized and married in a church with Princess Charlotte Louise of Brandenburg.
The current church was built in honor of Duke Gotthard Kettler of Courland and Zemgale in 1567. Since 1278, the image of St. Catherine has been decorated with the coat of arms of Kuldiga.

The building looks neat and well maintained. The church has a collection of editions of the Bible from different times, starting in 1252. The attendants are allowed to climb the bell tower, which overlooks the red tiled roofs of the houses and the waterfall on the Venta River.
