After the end of World War II, the building was nationalized, while retaining its function as a museum.
On May 11, 1946, the Regional Museum of Local Lore was opened in the building of the Japanese Museum, which continued research work on the history, archeology and ethnography of the region.

The area around the museum is no less interesting than its main part. There are models of houses of Nivkhs, weapons from the period of the Russian-Japanese war, a Japanese school pavilion, a bear log house and a fish drying rack. Sakhalin plants are also represented, which form the picturesque landscape of the island.
