Products in one of the shops at Souq Waqif market
Throughout the year, various festivals and exhibitions are held on the territory of Souq Waqif: from honey fairs, to theatrical, acrobatic and musical shows, wrestling championships and equestrian dressage.
You can even buy Dhow boats at the Souk Wakif market
The history of the Souq Waqif Oriental bazaar dates back several centuries.
Initially, the market started from the port embankment, where goods were delivered from all over the Middle East. Sellers traded on the shelves, and the first permanent shops were built here about 250 years ago.
The market got its name because of the flooding from the Persian Gulf: whatever it was, the bazaar always remained and existed in its place. Waqif means "Standing" in Arabic.
In 2003, most of it was destroyed by fire, after which work began on its restoration in 2006. Despite the modern buildings and underground parking that appeared in 2008, the market has completely preserved its historical appearance.
