The first mention of Sochi can be found in the records of the Turkish traveler Evliy Celebi, who found himself on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus in 1641. A little later, on the Russian map of the Black Sea in 1723, the village of Suchi was marked on the site of the modern city of Sochi.
