About the sight

Karosta Prison Museum

The Liepaja garrison prison was built around 1900 for the needs of the hospital, but was never used for these purposes. From the very beginning, it served as a guardhouse or a place of short-term disciplinary punishment. In the entire history of the prison, no one has managed to escape from its walls. Revolutionaries, sailors and junior officers of the Tsarist army, German deserters, enemies of the people of the Stalin era, and soldiers of the Soviet and Latvian armies served their sentences here.

Karosta Prison Museum, Liepaja, Latvia

Guided tours of the Karosta Museum are only available. Visitors are offered the opportunity to explore the prison, which has hardly changed since tsarist times, learn its history, visit the punishment cell and the cells in which prisoners were held, as well as listen to interesting and even scary stories from prison life, and thrill seekers are invited to spend the night in a prison cell.
