When talking about Europe, we are bound to recall medieval narrow alleys, beautiful cobblestones, tourists’ conversations, dining al fresco etc. We have become accustomed to seeing those sights in Italy, Spain, France. But how about Eastern Europe?
I want to start my story about North Macedonia not with the capital Skopje – with a small cozy town on the shore of the Ohrid Lake, which is the place that must be visited. About Skopje I’ll write another story :)

Ohrid is not just an old city – from 990 to 1015 it was the capital of the Bulgarian kingdom.
Heavy gates, armoured with armor
The city stretches along the lake, and where the steep rocks couldn't form a shoreline, an amazing bridge was built.
As you climb up, spectacular views open up.
Fishermen have built a small village among the steep cliffs.
The lake is fantastically clean.
During the reign of Tsar Samuil, a fortress was built, the ruins of which can be visited today.
In addition, during that period there was its own patriarchy in the city, so a separate note will be devoted to the churches of Ohrid.
In 1018, Ohrid was conquered by Byzantium, so Ottoman culture and architecture can be traced in parts of the city.
The city left an incredible impression. It's definitely worth coming back here.
