This is one of the most popular attractions in Riga, dedicated to the legendary heroes of the Grimm Brothers' fairy tale — the donkey, the dog, the cat and the rooster. Locals talk about the political aspect of the composition.
The monument was made by the Bremen sculptor Christa Baumgartel and presented to Riga as a gift by the twin city of Bremen. It was established in 1990.
In the lower tier of the monument there is a donkey supporting a dog with a cat on its back and a rooster sitting on it. At this moment, the Bremen Town musicians look through the window to the forest robbers. Locals put a different meaning into this scene and believe that the characters looked out behind the Iron curtain after the end of the Cold War.
All the characters have their noses rubbed – it is believed that if you make a wish, it will definitely come true, but it is more likely if you reach the nose of a rooster.
