The main symbol of the country's independence. A 9-meter sculpture of a woman is installed at the top of the 42-meter stele. The stars in her hands symbolize three historical regions of the country. At the base of the monument, sculptures and bas-reliefs reflect important historical events in Latvia.

The idea of erecting the monument was proposed by the Prime Minister in 1922, and Karlis Zala's project was selected as part of the competition. Construction began only 9 years later, when the necessary amount was collected thanks to donations: charity events, various auctions and performances of artists were held, the fees from which were received in the amount of the planned attraction of Latvia.
The monument was unveiled on the day of the 17th anniversary of the declaration of independence of Latvia - November 18, 1935.
