Cable-stayed bridge over the Daugava River

One of the most interesting bridges across the Riga Daugava. A cable-stayed bridge originating at the Riga Castle and passing through the island of Kipsala. The design of such a bridge is very unusual: the only supporting pylon, acting as a support, is connected to the roadbed by means of a system of steel cable— shrouds.

About the bridge

Due to its unusual design, this bridge is also recognized as one of the most beautiful in Riga — it looks like a stringed musical instrument. The total length of the bridge is more than 0.5 km, and the width is as much as 30 meters.

From a distance, the bridge supports look like thin threads, but each cable is an interlacing of 150 steel wires with a thickness of 6 mm each. Known throughout the Soviet Union, the bridge opened in 1981. Designed by the Kiev branch of Soyuzdorproject, at that time it became the longest cable-stayed structure in Europe.
