History

For centuries, Nan has been a separate autonomous region with little communication with the outside world. By the end of the 14th century, Nan was one of the nine northern Thai-Lao principalities that formed Lanna. The city-state flourished throughout the 15th century under the name Chiang Klang, which is a reference to its position about halfway between Chiang Mai and Chiang Tong (today's Luang Prabang). Parts of the old city wall and several early temples of the Lanna period can be seen in modern Nan.

What to see

Wat Phumin is the most famous temple in the city. It is located near the Nas National Museum.

Entertainments

Boat races and fairs with festivals are the main entertainment of local residents and a few tourists of Anas.

Every year in autumn, a rowing competition (Nan Boat Racing) takes place on the Nan River, in which teams from each of the Temples of the city participate.

The boats can reach a length of up to 30 meters and 50 people drive such a boat! Each boat is made of solid wood and stored on the temple grounds. The boats are decorated with mythological patterns, and the race itself is an unforgettable sight!

The races are held in the format of the two-week Nan Provincial Fair, which attracts people from all over Thailand.
