The Historical and Literary Museum "A. P. Chekhov and Sakhalin" is the oldest museum of local lore on Sakhalin, telling about the history of the island, its development and culture. Most of the museum is dedicated to the writer and doctor Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, who in 1893 published the book "Sakhalin Island" in the genre of travel notes from his trip to the island in 1890.
The book conveyed both Chekhov's personal impressions and the statistical data he collected. Both the way of life of local residents and the torments to which children who went to hard labor were subjected are described in sufficient detail.
The collection of exhibits includes more than 14,000 items, including Chekhov's personal authentic belongings, paintings, books and much more.
