Forte de São Tiago

Forte de São Tiago (Fortress of São Tiago do Funchal, Forte de São Tiago, Fortaleza de São Tiago) is a fort built in the 16th century, which served as a room for an artillery battery and protection from pirate attacks. After restoration in the 19th century, the structure passed into the possession of the Funchal Army Police and was there until 1992, after which the fort became an architectural monument.
