About the castle

Dobele Castle, Latvia

The settlement of the oldest inhabitants of Dobele – Zemgalov – was located here as early as 1000 BC. The castle was repeatedly mentioned in the Livonian rhymed chronicle in stories about battles that took place between local residents and German knights in the 13th century. From 1279 to 1289, Dobel Castle withstood six enemy sieges.

Only a part of the fortress wall, the walls of the church and a small part of the residential building have survived to our time. The castle grounds are quite large and cozy.
