The lava Tunnel (Raufarhólshellir) is a cave that was formed during the eruption of the Leitaraun volcano, which occurred about 5,200 years ago.
Raufarhólshellir
It is one of the longest caves in Iceland. Lava tubes are a natural channel formed when an active low viscosity lava flow forms a continuous and solid crust that thickens and forms a roof over a still flowing lava flow. Up until the last century, the tunnel was full of stalactites, but in the 1950s, more and more people began to visit the tunnel, and as a result, the stalactites began to disappear, and today there are almost none left.
