History

The history of modern Sigulda began between the 16th and 18th centuries. Then, on the route of the future railway connecting Pskov with Riga, Sigulda gradually turned into a transshipment point and resort. The date of foundation is considered to be 1207 — the year the Order of the Swordsmen created the castle of Segevold. An eventful history has left castles around Sigulda, the most important of which is the recently recreated Turaida Castle.

Sigulda, Latvia

In 1949-1962, Sigulda was the center of the Sigulda district of the Latvian SSR. After Latvia regained its independence in 1991, the authorities of Sigulda began to preserve its heritage and develop the tourism sector. An open-air opera festival was held on the ruins of the castle, and in May the city day is celebrated, coinciding with the flowering of cherry trees. Skiing, bobsleigh and luge are popular here in winter, while bungee jumping is available at any other time of the year.
