Overview

In the immediate vicinity of the village, since the 18th century, white marble of unique beauty has been mined, or as it was also called "marble of the June white night", which was used in cladding St. Isaac's Cathedral, Kazan Cathedral, Mikhailovsky Castle and many other famous sights of St. Petersburg.

After the completion of mining, the quarry was flooded, forming a unique transparent mountain lake — now an object of cultural heritage. Since 2005, the territory of the quarries has been united into a single Ruskeala Mountain Park, which includes several lakes, quarries and a Marble and lime Factory to which the railway goes.

Ruskeala is located 30 kilometers north of the city of Sortavala.
