The Italian quarry got its name thanks to Italian engineers who have been developing the deposit since the 18th century. During mining, the rock was drilled in certain places, gunpowder was loaded inside, and when detonated, the rock was broken off in strict blogs of 16 tons each, which was delivered to St. Petersburg for the construction of St. Isaac's Cathedral.
