The volcanic lake Myvatn was formed about 2.5 thousand years ago after a powerful eruption of the Krafla volcano. The frozen lava formed a peculiar outgrowth around the lava formation, so that the relief took the shape of a bowl. This natural reservoir was filled with water from underground springs, which continue to feed the lake today. Cold water comes from most of the springs, but due to the volcanic heat, part of the lake is not covered with ice in winter.
