The Akureyri Botanical Garden ((Lystigarður Akureyrar) was established by local women in 1912. The gardens, which now occupy 3.6 hectares, are home to more than 7,000 plant species; about 400 of them are native, but the vast majority are exotic species.

Among the flowers and other living plants in the garden there are several busts belonging to influential personalities of Iceland, and several quaint wooden buildings, some of which are among the oldest in the city.
