Valletta is not only a small town with an area of only 0.61 km2 and the capital of Malta, but also a city that is completely a UNESCO World Heritage Site: There are 320 architectural monuments in the city, which make Valletta an "open-air museum".
Valletta was designed and built by the Knights Hospitaller in the 16th century by order of Grand Master La Valletta. Surrounded by defensive walls and bastions, the inner part of it was created according to the Hippodamus "grid" layout system.
