Kurile Lake is a volcanic lake that is located on the site of a volcano caldera. The second largest freshwater lake in Kamchatka, whose name came from the name of one of the tribes of the Kamchatka Ainu — Kurils, who inhabited the area around the lake.
Kurile Lake is the largest spawning ground for sockeye salmon and red wild salmon in the whole of Eurasia. Due to the large number of fish, hundreds of brown bears approach the lake during spawning. There are safe areas around the lake for observing them. This is one of the brightest and most popular places to watch bears in Kamchatka.
