Hekla is a volcano in the south of Iceland, with a height of 1,491 meters, considered the most active volcano in Iceland. In the Middle Ages, Icelanders called it the "Gateway to Hell." The study of volcanic ash deposits has shown that the volcano has been active for at least the last 6,600 years.
