The Herring Era Museum (Síldarminjasafn Íslands) is Iceland's largest maritime museum and the only Icelandic museum to receive a European Museum Award.
The Herring Era Museum
The museum officially opened in 1994. Icelanders call herring the "silver of the sea." The Herring Era Museum exhibits 3 permanent exhibitions located in three different buildings. The first one tells about the city harbor of the 1950s. The second building tells about the history of the production of fishmeal and fish oil. And the exhibits of the third building demonstrate the process of salting herring.
