Studlagil (Stuðlagil) is located in the glacial valley of Jokuldalur. With the largest number of basalt rock columns in Iceland and the stunning blue-green glacial river contrasting with them, Studlagil is one of Iceland's hidden gems.
Studlagil Canyon was formed when the river broke through with a powerful force from the highlands to the north of the island. The course of this glacial river, which is 150 kilometers long, and the water level in it were so high that this area was considered dangerous. As a result, only sheep lived in the area around the canyon for a long time. Now that the water has calmed down and the water level has decreased, this natural beauty has become one of the most beautiful places in Iceland.
