Heimaey Island was formed as a result of the activity of the Vestmannaeyar volcanic complex. It is located in the Sudurnes region , in the Atlantic Ocean, and is the largest and only permanently inhabited island in Iceland. The area of Heimaei Island is 13.4 km2.
