Heimaey Island was formed as a result of the activity of the Vestmannaeyar volcanic complex. It is located in the Sudurnes region, in the Atlantic Ocean, and is the largest and only permanently inhabited island in Iceland. The area of Heimaei Island is 13.4 km2.
