Pitcairn Islands

Pitcairn Islands

The Pitcairn Islands are a territory of Great Britain. It consists of four islands: Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno. Pitcairn, the only inhabited island, is a small volcanic formation.

The capital is Adamstown on Pitcairn Island, but the administrative center of the country is located in Auckland, New Zealand at a distance of 5310 km from the islands themselves.

Pitcairn is quite difficult to get to. The nearest neighbors are Mangareva, one of the islands of French Polynesia, which is about 700 km across the ocean.

Tahiti is 2,170 km away, and Panama is 6,600 km away. Pitcairn has a population of about fifty people.

The climate on the island is tropical. It rains all year round. The driest month is August, and the wettest is June. From mid-May to mid-July, it is better to avoid visiting the island, as the country roads are very much washed out.

How to get

Cargo ship Silver Supporter

For many years, visiting the island has been possible only for local residents and government officials, but since 2023, anyone can come for a short period (for 4, 11 or 18 days). You can get there on the Silver Supporter cargo ship, which is chartered by the government of the country to deliver necessary food and medicines to the residents of the country. The vessel is comfortable enough, there is everything you need, including an air conditioning system. But there can be no more than 12 people on the ship.

The trip time is about 32 hours, departing from the port of Mangareva, French Polynesia.

The cost of a cruise on a Silver Supporter cargo ship

The calculations are carried out in New Zealand dollars and amount to 6000 nzd (3600 USD) one way. There are additional fees (about 50 USD) for disembarkation and landing at Bounty Bay on Pitcairn Island.

There are no hotels on the island. All guests stay with local residents who will talk about their lives, culture and history. The cost of accommodation varies depending on the duration and type of house - from 120 USD to 200 USD per day per person.

Cruise ships

Cruise ships are another way to get there. There are about 15 routes around the island, but they stop on the island for only 3 hours. During this time, it is impossible to fully explore the country.
