The Ölfusá is Iceland's largest river by volume. It begins at the junction of the Hvita and Sog rivers, north of the town of Selfoss, and flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
The bridge (Ölfusárbrú — suspension bridge) is the pride of the village, in a historical context it simplified transport links with Reykjavik. The bridge was first built in 1891, at that time it was considered the largest bridge in Iceland. In 1944, the cables broke, and a new suspension bridge was built in 1945.
