Overview

Korsakov is one of the first Russian settlements of Sakhalin established as military posts. Korsakov's official founding day is September 22, 1853.

Initially, the settlement was called "Muravyevsky post" — in honor of the acting governor-General of Eastern Siberia Nikolai Muravyov. After the change of the governor-General, the name of the post also changed. Since 1869, the settlement has changed its name to "Korsakov Post", in honor of another Governor-General of Eastern Siberia, Mikhail Korsakov. Since 1908, it has received the Japanese name Oodomari in Karafuto. And only on June 5, 1946, the city was renamed Korsakov.
