Arkhangelsk Gostiny Dvory (Arkhangelsk Guest Courtyards, "Stone Town" until the end of the XVIII century) is a fortress on an area of 9 hectares, which was built in 1668-83 by decree of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. The grandiose structure was designed to protect not only the commercial and administrative complexes located on its territory, but also to ensure the strategic security of passage through the mouth of the Northern Dvina inland.
Title the Arkhangelsk Guest Courtyards of the fortress were given only in 1763, when the Stone City was excluded from the list of strategic objects, and at the end of the XVIII century it was rebuilt to meet the needs of the city. For many centuries, administrative offices, the provincial court, the police, customs, as well as a lot of shops and shopping malls were located here.
The fortress also served during the Great Patriotic War — residents of the city hid in the basements during the bombing, and the communication center of the White Sea Military flotilla was located in the main buildings.
From 1992 to 2010, the Arkhangelsk Gostiny Dvor was completely renovated. Now there is a museum and cultural center in its buildings, including Arkhangelsk Regional Lore Museum is one of the oldest museums in Russia
